Starting from a hint provided by external reality - the need to defend anonymity in case histories - the Authors suggest the possibility for exploring the inner reality of the analytical relation and of the analyst through the naming of the patient. Ciphers, numbers, a new name, pseudonyms or synonyms attributed to patients take up the meaning of a trace to follow in the difficult effort to distinguish countertransference from the analyst's transference on the patient.
